You could pump air in the wheels.  On a skateboard, you can replace the wheels if they break.  You can clean your bike or the skateboard.

8.  When do you have to pedal hard to get where you are going (p. 347)?

You pedal hard when you go up the hill.

9.  How is driving on back roads different from driving on highways?

On highways is faster than back road but you see more.  On highways you are going faster so you don't see as much so on back roads you can see more because you are going slower.
